Coming down the stretch here. Give it up for a day 29 y'all. I was aiming to do a song in the style of Fleet Foxes but I think I ended up making something a bit more like Liana Flores. I started by listening to the track "The Shrine/An Argument" and wanting to channel some of that vibe but quickly derailed. This song goes out to my dear friend and coworker Martha. I had never actually heard of a ranunculus (buttercup flower) before she told me it was one of her favorites. For as long as I've been doing Jamuary and being a part of Cicadas, Martha is always asking me when I'm going to write my "happy songs". I've succeeded in writing a few, but melancholy is definitely more in my wheelhouse. I think the melody of this song is a bit haunting to be considered happy but I was aiming for a narrative about the coming of spring and the blooming of flowers and just holding on to get through the dread of winter. We're almost there. Lyrics: Buttercup Lonely upon the hill Waiting for What's built to spill Raindrops Can wash away Sorrowful In Shades of Grey Soon the sun Will break on through This heaviness That weighs on you We're almost there Ranunculus Thriving, though in the shade Better here Than trapped in some vase Coyote's eye Stolen out of the sky My little frog Springing to life Raindrops Can wash away Sorrowful In Shades of Grey Soon the sun Will break on through This heaviness That weighs on you We're almost there Buttercup
