In this conversation, Nitin Dua, Career Fulfillment Coach and Co-founder & MD of Hilfey Tech, sits with S. Gopalakrishnan, Former Executive Director of BHEL, who reflects on how recovery is never only medical. He begins by sharing that medicines may address only part of a condition, while the rest depends on the mind’s resolve. He recalls a sudden heart problem during work, marked by severe chest pain and hospitalization, when doctors advised an angioplasty. Even in that moment, he chose calm over panic, postponing the procedure briefly while remaining responsible and cautious about his health. He then revisits a defining accident from the age of 27. In the chaos of the crash, his first instinct was not his own safety but saving his pillion rider. Believing initially that he was unharmed, he ensured the other person was treated and taken home. Only later did the seriousness of his own condition surface. Doctors at AIIMS told him that his legs would need to be amputated. He refused. What followed was nearly ten months of being bedridden, a period that tested endurance, patience, and inner strength. As the conversation deepens, Nitin reflects on focus and psychological discipline. He speaks about how attention directs energy, how focusing on pain intensifies suffering, while choosing happiness gradually loosens its hold. He introduces the idea of “psychological accidents,” unseen inner shocks that affect many people, and explains how the feelings and thoughts present during such moments often shape long-term outcomes more than the incident itself. This discussion offers a grounded view of how mind, health, and career evolve together over time. More than forty years after the accident, Gopal walks several kilometers daily, despite partial nerve sensation and dietary restrictions, and carried significant professional responsibility without allowing physical limitations to define his actions. His journey reflects a steady integration of awareness, emotional control, and responsibility, showing that progress is shaped not only by medical recovery, but by the conscious choices one makes in responding to life’s hardest moments.
