Batman Returns is a beat 'em up game released for many different platforms, but is best known for the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom, NES) and Snes consoles and is based on the 1992 film of the same name, Batman Returns. The NES and Snes versions, unlike the previous games in the franchise, completely abandoned platforming and changed the genre to Beat 'em up. In the game, the player, as Batman, is asked to completely clear levels of enemies and, at the end of the level, fight bosses, as usual. The enemies are generally varied and visually resemble a circus gang - flamethrowers, acrobats, jugglers with grenades and other psychos who fit perfectly into the Gotham atmosphere. Batman is quite slow in the game. Just noticeably slow. So slow that you quickly notice how pressing the attack button before the enemy attacks you, the enemy's blow hits before yours, and at first it's annoying, especially if you're used to sharp and fast action games like Ninja Gaiden, but gradually you get used to it and there are no more difficulties. The difficulty of the game is surprisingly high. Not as high as in Battletoads, but not too easy either. The main problem is that health does not restore between levels. That is, if you finish a stage almost dead, you will start the next one in exactly the same state. First aid kits are found, but rare. Yes, you can replenish health a little with points, but this does not always save. The enemy hits painfully, quickly surrounds, so you need to not hit them thoughtlessly, but control what is happening on the screen. The graphics in the game are nothing special, they are exactly what you would expect from the NES console, but the music... the music here is simply incredible, each composition is very well imprinted in the memory and fits very harmoniously into the quite fast gameplay, where you need to constantly fight with enemies and you are not given a break between skirmishes. This game was definitely one of the most frequently appearing cartridges of the 90s, be it store shelves or player collections. In conclusion, I will say that if you like Batman games and you like the beat 'em up genre, then Batman Returns is definitely worth attention if for some reason you missed this game. There is nothing outstanding in it, it is just a very high-quality and interesting beat 'em up of the 90s, and it goes straight to the library of good games.
