The first known English Baptist congregation was formed by people from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, including John Smyth and Thomas Helwys, who also developed a radical policy of proposing religious freedom for all faiths. They influenced the thinking behind the US First Amendment and even the UN Declaration on Human Rights.
