A Sunday afternoon visit to the Severn Valley Railway now, mainly to see BR Standard Class 5MT no.73129 in action, who is currently on a summer visit to the Valley, from her home base at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley. She is unique in preservation, as she is the only surviving member of a batch of Standard 5MTs that were built with Caprotti valve gear, and one of only two preserved locomotives in the UK to have been built with this type of valve gear, the other being 71000 'Duke of Gloucester'. As well as 73129, five other locos could be seen in action, and on a normal day too! These included: GWR 1400 Class 0-4-2T no.1450 (On Loan to the SVR from the Dean Forest Railway, she spent the day on the SVR's Footplate Experience, with her Autocoach no.178) LMS Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0 no.43106 GWR 7800 'Manor' Class 4-6-0 no.7812 'Erlestoke Manor' GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 no.2857 GWR 4500 Class 2-6-2T no.4566 Shots included in the video: 1450 at Barke St Foot Crossing, with the 11:40 FE from Bridgnorth. 43106 rolls down Eardington Bank, with the 12:25 from Bridgnorth. 7812 climbs up Eardington Bank, with the 11:45 from Kidderminster. This would be her only train of the day, she was scheduled to be replaced at Bridgnorth by 2857. Positioning move, maybe? 73129 arrives at and departs from Arley, with the 13:05 from Kidderminster. 2857 barks up to the summit of Highley Bank, passing Barke St Foot Crossing with the 13:40 from Bridgnorth. 1450 passes through Highley Station, with the 13:55 FE from Kidderminster. 4566 passes Northwood Lane Level Crossing, on the approach to Bewdley, with the 14:20 from Bridgnorth. 73129 arrives at and departs from Arley, with the 14:55 from Bridgnorth. 1450 sweeps past Northwood Lane Level Crossing, with the 15:35 FE from Bridgnorth. 43106 arrives at and departs from Arley, with the 16:10 from Bridgnorth. Trains had been running late most of the day, so her stop time was cut down, much to my surprise. I was getting the shot of her right-hand motion and cylinder, when I noticed the nod from the guard, a fraction of a second after I'd re-positioned my camcorder, 43106 whistled up to leave. 73129 climbs up Eardington Bank, with the 16:55 from Kidderminster. The sound after she passed under the bridge was quite spectacular! Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone. Enjoy.
