They haven't seen as many safety innovations as tools like the table saw and miter saw. For this reason, circular saws can be one of the more dangerous power tools to use. But they are also one of the most useful power tools, and every carpenter needs to master them eventually! Skil makes one of the classic circular saws...their lightweight, rear handle, worm drive saw. You'll see these in use on jobsites all over America. But most people don't realize that the skilsaw incorporates a rare safety feature--the VARI-TORQUE CLUTCH. This safety feature is part of the blade mount. In includes the blade stud (bolt), the outer washer, the inner washer, and the blade itself. If the blade is mounted with the proper level of pressure, the vari-torque clutch with prevent dangerous circular saw kickbacks by allow the saw blade to slip when it encounters too much pressure. This innovation, if correctly used, can drastically reduce circular saw kickback. Sadly, very few saws feature the vari-torque clutch these days! I personally think more companies should incorporate it into their circular saws. What do you think? Would you use the vari-torque clutch settings with your circular saw?? Thanks! The Honest Carpenter
