CARE SD: I Support AB 241

Filipino Caregivers Deserve Dignity and Respect On May 28, 2013 - SAN DIEGO - The Filipino Migrant Center and the Caregiver's Association for Rights and Empowerment, San Diego (CARE, SD) held its graduation for the Caregiver Research (CARE) Project. Filipina caregivers, UCSD students and community leaders attended a 6-session training on how to do participatory research on the lives of Filipino caregivers in San Diego. The CARE Project hopes to provide a voice for these caregivers and engage the community to have these important conversations. Sheila Clark, a caregiver and a member of CARE, SD, said, "The caregivers have experienced many abuses from their employer. Caregivers have faced many ups and downs but it only has made us stronger. Now that the CARE participants have heard our stories they need stand with us in this struggle to pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights." "Caregivers provide basic personal care, friendship and emotional care, cooking and nutritional care and even cleaning and environmental care. In the CARE project I was able to learn their struggle and hear their voice. It is up to us to help them be heard, to share their stories, and to provide them with the power to make a change through support," said Cara Macapugay, a member of Anakbayan, San Diego. "Developing trust and relationships with the amazing group of caregivers has been very powerful not only in producing new perspectives, but entirely new ways to understand my relationship to myself, others, and society," said Irving Ling, Political Action and Awareness Coordinator, Asian Pacific Student Alliance, UCSD. After 6 weeks of training, the participants are inspired to continue telling the stories of these Filipina caregivers. They personally have made an emotional connection with these Filipina caregivers and now are advocating for the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (AB 241), which was recently passed through the Assembly on May 30th in Sacramento, CA. AB 241 six provisions would protect the right to (1) Overtime Pay, (2) Meal and Rest breaks, (3) Workers Compensation, (4) 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, (5) use of kitchen facilities and (6) paid days of rest. These fundamental labor protections in the CA Domestic Workers Bill of Rights have been contested for three years by special lobby groups and last year's disappointing veto of Governor Brown. "The work of domestic workers must be acknowledged as dignified employment not brought down by the greedy employers and apathetic government officials," Maridel Andrada, organizer for Filipino Migrant Center. The Filipino Migrant Center, Caregivers Association for Rights and Empowerment, SD and the participants of the CARE project demand for the dignity and respect for domestic workers and the passing of the CA Domestic Workers Bill of Rights!
