Recorded live at the Cafe Wah? in Greenwich Village, NYC on Sunday, May 4, 2025, by Bob Russell Check out Jeff Slate at https://jeffslatehq.com/ Notes from Bob Russell: We saw Jeff Slate and band perform on Sunday at the legendary Cafe Wha? in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The small venue is the first music club that Bob Dylan performed at after just arriving in New York on January 24th, 1961. The theme of the night was songs of the Traveling Wilburys, both collectively and solo. But make no mistake, Slate is a talented songwriter/performer in his own right, with four solo albums, his latest being “The Last Day of Summer,” a powerful collection of originals. It mixes catchy singer-songwriter tunes (e.g., Til New York City Dies) with rocking cuts like (my favorite) the great groove of Movin’ On. The setlist included a number of these fine new ones. Jeff is also a dynamic, charismatic performer, and the band at the Wha? included good work by lead guitarist Mark Bosch and Johnny Pisano on bass guitar. Check the video of a rocking version of Duncan and Brady, a really old song done in the past by both Lead Belly and Bob Dylan. Note that the song’s tag line, “Been on the job too long,” is the final lyric of Dylan’s Black Rider. See Jeff Slate if you can…
