Tammy Rick, the Garden Manager at Living Legacy Gardens in Staples, Minnesota, showcases the "herb dial," a favorite destination for visitors located on the east side of the grounds. The collection features a diverse mix of annuals and perennials, including unique specimens like marshmallow—historically used for confectionery—and the mineral-rich comfrey, often utilized as a nutrient-dense mulch. Rick emphasizes the interactive nature of the garden, noting that tours often conclude here so guests can sample flavors like anise-tasting tarragon or popular chocolate mint. Beyond its culinary and medicinal appeal, the herb dial serves as a vital sanctuary for pollinators, with bees frequently seen swarming the blooming marshmallow and mint plants. The garden’s success is a collaborative effort involving a dedicated team of staff, summer interns, and long-term volunteers, some of whom have contributed for over 25 years. Maintenance is a labor-intensive process primarily involving hand-weeding with Japanese tools to manage invasive varieties and spreading mints. In addition to preservation, the facility acts as an educational hub, offering adult classes on topics like vermiculture and wreath-making, alongside a flexible Children’s Gardening Program. This youth initiative allows children to plant, tend, and harvest their own beds throughout the summer, while also exploring specialty areas like the whimsical fairy garden and various floral demonstrations. Prairie Yard & Garden airs weekly on Pioneer PBS at 7:30 p.m. CST on Thursday evenings and subsequent episodes of PY&G rebroadcast Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Mondays at 1 p.m. following the initial air date on Pioneer PBS. In addition to station broadcasts, viewers in Pioneer PBS’s viewing area can also stream the premiere live at pioneer.org/live, on YouTube TV, Prime Video, Hulu Live, or via the “Live TV” button on the PBS app and pbs.org. Full episodes can also be streamed at pioneer.org/pyg, the PBS app, the Prairie Yard & Garden YouTube channel and pbs.org/show/prairie-yard-garden. First aired in 1987, Prairie Yard & Garden (PY&G) is a Midwest gardening program produced by Pioneer PBS. Production assistants Gorden McIntosh and Vivian Heltemes provide additional videography.
