If you are moving to Charleston, SC you may want to look into the different charter schools. My children attended Orange Grove Charter School in West Ashley and we have been very pleased. It is located near the Cosgrove Bridge off of Orange Grove Road, and with a central location, it is easy to access even if you live in other parts of Charleston. Many people want to know how charter schools actually work. Think of them like private schools within the public school system. Public schools in Charleston all subscribe the the school district's menu and lesson plans. Charter schools are different. They get funding from the state to pay for school, but they can choose to write their own rule book, and in order to keep their charter, they simply have to succeed. And succeeding in Charter schools means getting good grades. Orange Grove Charter School does a great job of evaluating strengths and weaknesses, and putting kids where they need to be in order to teach them where they need the most help. Some kids are strong readers, so they need to be challenged, while others need more focus. This is why they have different learning groups. Traditional schools are not as flexible, and this is one of the main reasons why Orange Grove Charter School in West Ashley is able to keep their charter, and test higher than the average schools across the nation test. John Clendaniel calls Orange Grove Charter Elementary a "high performing school", and from my experience of having had two children attend since the were in kindergarten, I would agree with him. Both of my girls get straight A's and know how to study well. I am certain they could have gotten the same results in a traditional school, but we tried for Orange Grove by studying up on the registration and lottery process, and we were fortunate enough to get our oldest in first. Once a sibling gets in, the second child is guaranteed a spot, which is wonderful. As a Realtor, there are many agents who do not understand this. If you see a home as advertised as being in the Orange Grove School District in West Ashley, you should question that immediately. Watch this video and learn about the lottery process, the registration process and get a tour fo the school with principal, John Clendanial.
