Aguaje Oil (Buriti Oil) is gaining international attention as the richest natural source of beta carotene with152,000 μg RAE/100g in the oil. Beta carotene serves as a dietary source of provitamin A and is a powerful antioxidant. It has been shown to improve cognitive function, skin health, lung health, and eye health. The high concentration of beta carotene and omega-9 fatty acids make aguaje oil especially beneficial for the skin. The beta carotene converts into retinol esters and thus epidermal vitamin A when applied topically. Aguaje oil provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection making it ideal for skin creams. In addition to its remarkable nutritional and healing properties, Eco Ola’s aguaje oil is the gold standard for ecological and social impact, setting it apart from other products. Aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa) is a large palm tree native to the Amazon Rainforest. These palms define the aguajal ecosystem known to hold the largest carbon stores of any terrestrial ecosystem and high levels of biodiversity. The aguaje fruits are a major source of food for many of the charismatic and threatened species of the Amazon such as macaws, tapirs, peccaries, and monkeys. Unfortunately, due to the height of these palms, reaching up to 40 meters, they are being cut down to harvest the fruit. Twenty years ago our community partners invented climbing gear made from locally sourced recycled materials and set aside a large area of degraded forest as a conservation area. Today this area is both a sanctuary for endangered wildlife like Harpy Earles and a convenient source of aguaje fruits. We are continuing this work by regenerating rainforest that will provide for the economic needs of the community, sequester carbon, and provide wildlife habitat. Without dramatic and decisive action now, we will pass the tipping point in the current ecological crisis. The world’s largest rainforest is becoming a net emitter of greenhouse gasses and industrial agriculture is the main driver. Real regenerative agriculture is the solution.
