Agnes's Place written by Marit Larsen, illustrated by Jenny Løvlie, and translated by Kari Dickson Music from bensound.com Kid's book read aloud Agnes knows she is at home before she even opens her eyes in the morning. The sounds and smells and people swirl around her—she always knows what everyone is up to in the tight-knit apartment building where she lives. But she also knows what it is like to be the only child in a place full of adults who never have time. So when a little girl moves in to the building, Agnes is excited and sends her a subtle message. But the girl doesn’t respond. Then things start to change around Agnes’s place—and Agnes knows exactly who is to blame. It seems like the girl is interested in everyone except for Agnes! Will Agnes and the new girl ever meet? And what secrets does the new girl hold? First published in Norway, this is a lovely story about home and belonging and how one person can transform our world. Review “The text and illustrations work in tandem to bring the magic of apartment living and new friendship to life. Shapes, lines and colors create movement and a strong visual throughline, helping readers’ eyes navigate detailed illustrations full of the messy, vibrant elements of life. Patterns and textures add another layer of cozy charm…A love letter to new friendships and apartment living.” —Kirkus Reviews From the Publisher We all need a place to belong. I love how this book explores that theme through five-year-old Agnes’s very eager eyes. The apartment building where she lives exists as its own character in the story, chock-full of quirky neighbors, and Agnes holds a very special place in this universe. But it’s all suddenly disrupted when the new girl, Anna, comes along. Although at first Agnes worries she’s being replaced and overlooked by Anna, eventually the two girls find their way to each other—and the result is pure magic! This story reminds readers young and old of the importance of home and the joy and wonder of our first friendships in life. About the Illustrator Jenny Løvlie grew up in Northern-Norway on Ekkerøy, a tiny peninsula sticking out into the Barents Sea, where she was the first child to be born in 12 years. Summers were spent in the great outdoors under the never setting sun, climbing rocks, watching the seagull-chicks hatching and rock-pooling and the dark winters reading, drawing and making. Jenny studied Illustration & Animation at Kingston University in London, and graduated with a BA Hons in 2014. Her love of nature shines through her work and she draws inspiration from the wild landscapes of Scandinavia, nordic folklore and Scandinavian design. She uses bold colours, interesting textures and strong shapes in creating landscapes, people and animals. Jenny is fascinated by the strong bond between humans and animals and the link between humans and nature. Jenny’s favourite things are going on adventures in the great outdoors, camping, bird-watching, cooking and reading. Jenny won the Waterstones Children's book prize for best illustrated book for The Girls, written by Lauren Ace 2019
