Title: "Resource Allocation in OFDM Systems" Date: April 19, 2006 1:30 PM Speaker: Jianwei Huang Princeton University Abstract: Orthogonal Frequency-division Multiplexing (OFDM) is used in many promising communication technologies such as Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), Wireless LAN (802.11 a/g), WiMAX (802.16), Digital audio/video broadcasting (DAB/DVB) and Ultra Wideband (UWB). The major benefits of using OFDM include high spectrum efficiency and resistance against multipath interferences. In this talk, we consider the design of efficient resource allocation algorithms for three OFDM-based communication systems, which are motivated by single-cell OFDM systems, multi-carrier ad hoc networks and DSL networks, respectively. We want to optimize the resource allocation such as user-subchannel associations and transmission power levels, in order to maximize the system performance measured in total network utility. We model the problems as non-convex optimization problems, propose efficient algorithms to solve the problems by utilizing the special structures of individual systems, and prove optimality and convergence of the proposed algorithms using techniques mainly from (convex) optimization theory and (super-modular) game theory. The solutions are being considered in the next generation communication products from companies such as Motorola and Acatel-Lucent.
