Prof. Todd Austin gives an invited lecture at UC-Davis ECE titled "From Security to Immunity". If our body's "security" system (i.e., the human immune system) worked like computer security systems today, the human race would have long ago become extinct. The human immune system possesses capabilities that go far beyond that of any computer security capability. In particular, the human adaptive immune system combined with the immunological memory system has the power to stop never-before-seen attacks (i.e., pathogens) while at the same time learning to stop these new attacks more efficiently in the future (i.e., immunization). During this presentation, we will ponder the following question: Can computer security adapt the powerful mechanisms of the human immune system to build systems with more durable and adaptable security defenses? As one demonstration of this possibility, I will present the Morpheus secure CPU, a joint effort between University of Michigan, Princeton University and University of Texas at Austin, that espouses many qualities held by the human immune system.
