CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Two University of Cincinnati Police officers are honored for saving a student's life. Officers Kennerly Newlin and Laura Hutchings were called to the College of Business for a report of a student suffering a seizure on Feb. 5. When they arrived, the male student was unconscious, bleeding from a head injury and was not breathing. The officers performed CPR and used a defibrillator before paramedics arrived. Doctors said the student would have died without the officers' efforts. Newlin and Hutchings were given life-saving awards: pins they can wear for their entire careers: "I've thought about it a lot over the past few weeks, and one of the main reasons I got into this work was because I wanted to help people. And so, if there's going to be something bad happen, I'd rather it didn't happen, but if it does, I'm just thankful that I get to come to work every day and be the guy that gets to help somebody out," said Newlin. The student was in intensive care at UC Medical Center for a week but has since been released and is recovering. He's expected to return to school as soon as he can.
