The world is complex, uncertain and many of the problems we face, climate change, poverty, migration, are wicked. Anticipating the impacts of a decision is remarkably difficult, in part because the other players will respond and adapt their strategies. So we stumble through darkness with our hands in front of us hoping not to get hurt. Games are powerful tools to understand how people make decisions, to explore alternative strategies and negotiate agreements. It is much easier to develop a strategy with the chess board and pieces in front of us than with a blindfold. Dr. Claude Garcia is a tropical ecologist leading the FoDev Team, a joint research unit between CIRAD, France and ETH Zürich, Switzerland. His research aims at understanding the drivers of change in tropical landscapes using games to invite decision-makers to explore alternative futures. His goal is to help people develop better strategies and make more informed decisions. He created InSpire Strategy and Decision, a start-up that offers this service to anybody struggling with wicked problems and complexity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
