Vertical Grain vs. End Grain Target for Knife Throwing

I recently built a vertical grain target-- my thoughts being that it'd be a great beginner knife throwing project as many beginners start off knife throwing indoors with smaller, inexpensive knives. After throwing my smaller knives at this target, I became really frustrated because they kept bouncing out. It wasn't until I threw my Flying Steel East Winds (which had consistent sticks) that I noticed the smaller knives are not suitable for vertical grain targets. Larger, heavier knives (greater than 9 inches) and with a slim profile will usually stick fine in a vertical grain target. Or better yet, just make an end grain target (or use log rounds, which are also end grain)! Those are the best!
