You see a golf ball, but aren't sure it's yours, can you lift your ball to identify it? Yes, of course that's permitted under the rules of golf, but many players just kneel down and rotate the ball, thinking there's no issue with that. But think again, my friends. Chapters are below... If your ball is at rest anywhere on the course and you're not sure it's your ball, you are permitted to lift it to identify it. But you must first put a mark down right next to it. This artificial object can be a tee or a ball marker/coin. Just set the marker down next to the ball before you lift or even rotate the ball. Some players just put their club down on the ground right next to the ball to use that as a marker - that's permitted, but I prefer placing the mark down instead just in case I lose my balance when squatting down. Anywhere except on the putting green, you are not allowed to clean your ball when you are simply lifting it to identify it, but there's an exception to that (so many exceptions in golf!). If your ball is so dirty or muddy that you are not able to identify it, then you are allowed to clean just enough of the ball to enable you to confirm that it is in fact your golf ball. Be sure to place the ball back down on the exact spot it was on before you lifted it. PRO TIP: You are permitted to reposition the ball on the original spot - in other words, if you have a line on your golf ball, you can line that up to help you with your next stroke. If it was muddy though, and the mud was on the bottom, you have to replace the ball with mud on the bottom, but otherwise like it up as you wish! 0:00 Can you pick up your ball to identify it? 0:20 If you lift your ball before putting a mark down you will earn a one stroke penalty :33 You cannot clean your ball when you have lifted it If you want to gain confidence in the rules, you won't want to miss my new digital course: Girlfriends Golf Academy: Your Guide to the Rules Click here to get notified when it launches: https://bit.ly/GG-rules
