The scholars of Islam loved books more than comfort: collecting them, travelling for them, and living among them. To them, knowledge was the greatest wealth. Imam Ibn Taimiah was known for his intense love of books. Even while imprisoned, he continued reading and writing. When his books were taken away, he said that this loss was harder upon him than imprisonment itself. Ibn ‘Abd al-Hadi said about him: “Books were dearer to him than food and drink.” [📖 Al-‘Uqud ad-Durriyyah] His devoted student, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, inherited the same love for books and knowledge. He beautifully said: وَكَمْ مِنْ فَتْحٍ لِلْعِلْمِ جَاءَنِي مِنْ كِتَابٍ “How many openings of knowledge came to me through a book.” [📖 Miftah Dar as-Sa‘adah] Books were not just objects to them, they were companions, teachers, and doors to closeness with Allah. My 1st book of the year, Abu Hasan al-Asy'ari, who was he? Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Asy'ari (260-324H) was a leading Sunni theologian and the founder of the Ash'ari school of creed ('aqidah). He defended orthodox Islamic beliefs using the Qur’an, Sunnah, and sound reasoning, and his methodology became widely followed among Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaah, especially by many great scholars after him. #islamicbooks
