Filmbar is more than happy to plunge headlong into the abyss with our love of the utterly barking, hyper intense 'Possession'. Fuelled by the unbridled energy of Isabelle Adjani (whose convulsive performance justly earned her best actress award in Canne) and directed by Andrzej Zulawski (a true yet under appreciated cinematic visionary), 'Possession' is a black and bleak comedy of emotional and marital disintegration and features some very bizarre sex amongst its many delights. Along for this ride of cinematic hysteria are Berkoffesque Heinz Bennent and 'Jurassic Park's Sam Neill, proving that he's capable of rather more than just dodging Raptors. When Mark (Neill) returns to his home in Berlin, he is devastated to discover that his wife Anna (Adjani) has been conducting an affair with the guru-like Henrich (Bennent). As his grip on control collapses he finds himself plunged into an emotional maelstrom. However, his issues are positively restrained when compared to those of Anna, who has descended into an existence that includes murder, madness and a very slimy 'bit on the side'. Add the outbreak of World War III, idealised doppelgangers and the most inappropriate use of an electric carving knife in cinema, and we have a film that defies rational classification. 'Possession' also has the dubious honour of being bizarrely banned during the video nasty debacle whilst also being nominated for the best film at both César and BAFTA. An incredible eruption of heightened passion and manic, unrelenting energy, 'Possession' may be challenging and at times harrowing, yet is be an experience that must be viewed t be believed.
