Over the past few years, subscriptions have become increasingly popular across health and fitness brands, and Garmin now joins the trend. But does this really align with what we know and love about Garmin? In this video, I'll walk you through what this Garmin Connect+ includes—feature-by-feature, objectively and clearly—and afterwards, I'll share my honest thoughts on this new direction. Let's dive right in! So first: what exactly is Garmin Connect+? Garmin Connect+ is an optional premium subscription now available within Garmin’s Connect smartphone app, which until now has always remained totally free. Garmin says that all current features in Garmin Connect will continue being completely free. Connect+ is just an additional layer of advanced premium features, which according to Garmin basically offers users even deeper insights into their health and fitness. By the way, for those of you that don’t know me, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Let’s start by going through the new features it includes: The first major new feature is called Active Intelligence. This is powered by artificial intelligence, and it provides personalized insights and practical suggestions based on your unique health, fitness, and activity data. What's particularly interesting is that Garmin says the AI learns more about you over time, adapting its recommendations as it becomes more familiar with you and your personal goals. I am a fan of using AI in different aspects of life, and I think it can be helpful if implemented well. We still have to see if this works well in the long run, since I’ve only just been able to start testing it. The insights so far haven’t been ground-breaking for me, but I’ve honestly not had enough time to say anything conclusive. In general with AI we have to see how things go. I can imagine a future, where instead of having AI integrated into each app and website separately, we have some general purpose AI that has access to all our data, and can provide more holistic advice that way. This kind of app specific AI might become redundant, though of course with the current AI trend, it makes sense Garmin includes it, and it might be useful in the short term. I just wonder if this kind of disconnected AI for all aspects of life is optimal and sustainable in the long run. Next up is the Performance Dashboard.
