The former Cincinnati Children's Hospital chaplain detained by ICE will stay in the Butler County Jail, at least for now: https://bit.ly/4o0YwVE A federal judge granted a temporary restraining order on Tuesday keeping Ayman Soliman from being moved as his court proceedings continue. Local 12 also learned more about why his asylum status was terminated. Rob Ratliff is one of Soliman's attorneys. He said his client was doing work for a charitable organization, which an asylum officer said has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Ratliff said the asylum officer made a determination that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization. While the Egyptian government considers them a terrorist group, the United States doesn't. "It then finds that the group that Mr. Soliman had worked for at a local level, at a national level—that group the asylum officer determines provided material support to the Muslim Brotherhood, and therefore that makes that group a tier three terrorist organization as well," said Ratliff. Ratliff said the group Soliman worked with is al-Jameya al Shareya, also spelled as al-Gam’iyya al Shariiyya. "The asylum officer's theory was that this group had provided transportation for women to vote and that this group had provided medical services within the local community," said Ratliff. He said the Egyptian government and courts previously ruled that the group isn't involved in terrorism and isn't affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. "The asylum officer chose to minimize the actual Egyptian law on this," said Ratliff. Soliman was first granted asylum in 2018 before it was terminated in June. "What's important is in their decision to terminate, the immigration officer made no findings that he was not entitled to asylum," said Ratliff. Ratliff said nothing was found that Soliman didn't have legitimate and reasonable fears of persecution if he returned to Egypt. "The only finding was that this, again, this tortured logic of all these different groups suddenly labeled terrorist groups, and he's caught in the middle of that," said Ratliff. Soliman has several hearings next week in immigration court in Cleveland. The first is set for July 22, with a bond hearing scheduled for the following day. South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace introduced a bill in Congress in June. It would require the Secretary of State to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). That bill has yet to get a hearing. _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WKRC on Facebook: / wkrctv WKRC on Twitter: / local12 WKRC on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/local12wkrc...
