A day project, something I'd been meaning to do for a number of years: Partial disassembly, cleaning, and repairs on a Yamaha RX-495 home stereo amplifier. I removed surface dust, fixed "crackly" bass / treble / balance rotary control knobs and a "pure direct" button with DeoxIT electrical contact cleaner, and repaired a partially-broken power button. DeoxIT may be a bit of a specialty item - pricey and/or hard to find depending on where you live - but it works like a charm. I bought this amp in 1996 with hard-earned money from a high school job, and I've taken good care of the amp for 24 years to date. I still use it regularly. However, it was in need of a good cleaning, dusting and removal of oxidization on a few buttons and controls. The before/after shows a good amount of dust, grime and whatnot removed from the front panel. A bit of "Pledge" kitchen multi-surface cleaner on the panel (after taking it off of the amp), a water rinse and a buff with a soft cloth worked wonders. The "Pure Direct" button simply bypasses the rotary knobs, so you get a "pure" signal from the amplifier. With all the oxidization, however, I was having real trouble getting consistent clear audio out of the amplifier. The switch would sit between the two settings, perhaps, and sometimes one channel would be slightly or fully muted. This has been going on for years, and I should have fixed this years ago. Oh well! There is some grime that has really built up on the PCBs here, and it might be fun to try cleaning the boards in an ultrasonic bath - if that can be done safely. Maybe you have an amplifier that's in similar shape and needs some work? Perhaps this video will inspire you to finally do it! It can be fun, and the reward of clean equipment and restored audio is nice.
