Continuing the series of making use of wood I have had kicking around the shop for way too long I turned this old spalted birch long into a winged bowl with a live edge finish. This woodturning project tested my abilities as I have never turned a bowl in this style and turning the wings was tough as this wood was extremely soft. Turning a winged bowl has been on my project list for a long time so I'm happy to have finally tackled it. I have a ton of ideas for future woodturning projects so I'm happy to have this one under my belt. Half logs are a great medium for woodturning as you can turn them into so many different shapes from live edge bowls to winged bowls to bowls with multiple rims, or even feet. I don't show it much in this video but having a negative rake scraper is such an incredible tool when working with softwoods. It leaves an incredibly smooth finish which really cuts down on the sanding time. I do a pass on both the inside and outside of almost every bowl now with the negative rake scraper to get a uniform surface and clean up any tear-out. 🔨 Tools Used in this Video: 🔵 General 26020 Lathe - Out of Production 🔵 Crown Bowl Gouge - https://amzn.to/3yipIUV 🔵 Carter & Sons Bottom Feeder Gouge 🔵 Carter & Sons Negative Rake Scraper 🔵 Makita Random Orbit Sander - https://amzn.to/3e7BrhJ
