Ascension Day is a federal holiday in Germany, which means truck traffic is banned from driving in Germany. As usual, the trucks first occupy the border rest area, and then begin to line up on the shoulder. This line was not extremely long, about 2 kilometers. Before the recession, this line could reach as far as 15 kilometers. These problems exist mainly since the accession of Poland in the EU in 2004. The Polish economy is booming, and there is a huge amount of east-west truck traffic from the Netherlands to Poland and points east.
