Four children living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) teach others how they’re more alike than different in this short documentary. Demonstrating how kids living with diabetes are Just Like You, Sierra Adams, Jack Bichelmeyer, Garrett Brown, and Grace Chisholm are joined by their best friends, Zenia Amrolia, Peter McLiney, Kirby Motsinger, and Jake Smith, as they tell their real-life stories and experiences with childhood diabetes management and awareness among their peers. Each of the four stars of the film shows admirable courage as they explain what it’s like living with type 1 diabetes and how that has affected their friendships, school life, and ability to sympathize with the health struggles of others their age. The kids, along with award-winning diabetes advocate and former Miss America Nicole Johnson, and Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett, discuss how diabetes in children can be recognized, what the condition entails, and how the treatments for the condition can affect the way children with diabetes are perceived by their friends and teachers. They also talk about the different ways you can be a good friend to someone living with diabetes, regardless of their age. Each of the children in this film was diagnosed with diabetes at a young age. They know firsthand how important type 1 diabetes awareness and inclusion are to those who are newly diagnosed. They are also lucky enough to have great friends who have shown empathy and kindness throughout their relationship and illness. Together, the friends explain what diabetes is, how type 1 diabetes symptoms differ from those in adults, and how sharing inspiring diabetes stories from people like Nicole Johnson and George Brett can make a powerful impact on the way society treats kids with the condition. As part of their goal to increase diabetes awareness for children, our four stars and their friends also have a lot to say about the type 1 diabetes myths and misconceptions they’ve encountered over the years. Each of the children wishes that diabetes health education would be more common. Another shared wish among the kids is that people make an effort to learn more about diabetes in children so they won’t always be expected to explain what type 1 diabetes is or reassure people that it’s not contagious or just caused by a bad diet. This is one of the driving factors behind why JDRF created this type 1 diabetes documentary, to provide diabetes education for children, by children. From describing exactly how diabetes affects their lives to how insulin shots or an insulin pump works to keep them alive and healthy, Sierra, Jack, Garrett, and Grace are shining examples of JDRF advocacy and offer kids with type 1 diabetes and friends of kids with type 1 diabetes the real stories and struggles they wish everyone else knew about too. Sierra talks about how it’s difficult when people assume she can’t have sugar and skip over her when sharing candy just because she has diabetes. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes in kids can be effectively managed by changing the insulin dose according to the amount of sugar you’ve eaten. Jack and his friend Peter talk about how important it is for Jack to check his blood sugar often and always have something to eat with him in case it drops. This leads to a range of stories from the kids about the interaction between type 1 diabetes and sports and how they need to adjust their exercise routines to ensure they keep their sugar as stable as possible. By explaining diabetes support for young people in a simple, approachable way, this film from JDRF strives to make information and treatment for type 1 diabetes more accessible. We also aim to continue spearheading research into type 1 diabetes cures and new treatments.
