Hands-on training for medical, rather than surgical, juniors took centrestage at the first UK Kidney Week (UKKW; 7– 9 June, Birmingham, UK) with stations on peritoneal dialysis, central venous catheter placement using a state-of-the-art simulator, a “home-made” chicken model to practice renal biopsy and an ultrasound model that allows showing pathology as well as physiology. Nick Inston (Birmingham, UK, editor-in-chief of Renal Interventions) does a whistlestop tour with Saeed Ahmed (Sunderland, UK) to discuss the coming modular-based curriculum of procedural training so that departments have the different skillsets to complement each other to provide patient-focused complete care to cover an on-call shift rota. “The next step is to do a one-day course and provide this interventional nephrology workshop at other events,” says Ahmed.
