PET | TAO co-founder, and TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) veterinarian, Dr. Marc Smith, explains when to choose surgery to fix a dog's luxating patella. "Hello, ladies and gentleman. I'm Dr. Marc Smith. I was going to give you a brief tip on if you have a dog with a luxating patella. A luxating patella is the kneecap goes out of place. Lots of times, this happens in small breed dogs, and it'll go immediately in the inside. What I'm trying to get, the point I'm trying to get across in this video is when do you decide to do surgery. There's different grades of patella luxation. Every one of them affects your pet differently, but when do you do surgery? You do surgery specifically when it causes your pet to limp consistently over time. What happens, when that patella gets out of place, then your dog's going to hold his leg up, but when it gets back in place, he'll run around like he's normal. A lot of those dogs, especially if they're small breed dogs, I don't recommend surgery. Some of the larger ones, like this guy right here, we're getting ready to do surgery on, we would do it, but all patella luxations don't necessarily need surgery. If it's affecting your pet's quality of life, then it's a good time to do it, but if it's not, I wouldn't worry about it.
