The use of high performance fibre-reinforced polymer composites is rising exponentially in a wide range of applications from aerospace to sporting goods. However, compression of these materials has limiting factors including fibre micro-buckling, fibre kinking and defects within the matrix or interface. NextCOMP is a five-year, £6.2m ‘programme grant’ from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Researchers from the project are drawn from the University of Bristol, Imperial college and industry. They talk about redesigning the composite and developing new constituents and new architectures within a new analytical and computational framework. Inspiration is drawn from natural hierarchical composites such as wood, bamboo or bone. The combination of people, connections, knowledge and expertise will contribute to the development of next generation fibre composite materials that are expected to offer more than double the compressive performance of the best carbon reinforced materials currently on the market.
