The Cranfield Icing Wind Tunnel is the largest UK icing wind tunnel facility operating at a university and there's only a few others in the world of this capacity. The tunnel section size is 760 millimeters by 760 millimeters and operates at a maximum speed of 100 meters per second, this corresponds roughly to about 75 kilograms of air per second. It is possible to drop temperature as low as minus 30 degrees. The tunnel is capable of sending water in the airstream to concentration level typical of what could be found in a natural icing condition and thanks to its construction it's very easy to remove the test section and replace it with a bespoke test section. For example, for an aircraft engine you might want to have a low mass flow inside the core of the engine and have a bypass to keep the mass flow of the tunnel to its nominal capacity. The Icing Wind Tunnel at Cranfield University is used by various industry partners, one example is a collaborative project with Safran Aircraft Engines called IceGenesis to develop an icing protection system for aircraft wings.
