Imagine... You're in the hospital. Your therapist stands by your side. He is a diagnosed psychopath with no medical qualifications, and he goes on to prescribe your treatment and medication. Sound like a nightmare? Well, this was actually the case for the patients who ended up at the Oak Ridge psychiatric unit in the 1960's in Ontario, Canada. Looking back, it’s hard to believe the psychiatric community—and even government authorities—hailed the Oak Ridge experiment as a groundbreaking advance in mental health care. But to understand why, you have to consider the grim state of treatment at the time. For centuries, mental asylums were dark, unsettling places where society’s most vulnerable, and sometimes violent, were often abandoned, not treated. These institutions evoke images of crumbling halls, eerie whispers, and suffering—symbols of medical ignorance and human cruelty. Early asylums were little more than prisons for the "mad," designed to hide the mentally ill rather than help them. Treatments ranged from chaining patients in squalor to torturous methods like lobotomies or electroshock therapy meant to "cure" by force. In this video, we explore the story of Dr. Elliott Barker and the Oak Ridge Experiment! This video is for educational purposes only. Like, comment and subscribe! Want to support the channel? Thanks!
