In The Natural History of Nightshades, Dr Sandra Knapp explores how plant taxonomy and systematics underpin our understanding of biodiversity, evolution, and nature recovery. Focusing on Solanum—one of the largest and most complex genera of flowering plants—this talk reveals why taxonomy is not an academic end point, but a critical foundation for conservation science, environmental policy, and sustainable agriculture. With over 1,250 recognised species, including globally important food crops, Solanum presents unique challenges and opportunities for biodiversity research. Dr Knapp traces the journey from traditional taxonomic monographs and floras to modern, multidisciplinary approaches involving phylogenetics, genomics, and plant breeding. This work demonstrates how large, species-rich genera can unlock insights into plant evolution, ecosystem dynamics, and resilience in a changing climate. The video highlights how systematics enables better decision-making in conservation, nature recovery, and environmental economics by clarifying species relationships and ecological function. Hosted in collaboration with the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery and the Biodiversity Network, this talk brings taxonomy to the forefront as a vital tool for addressing today’s environmental and societal challenges. Ideal for academics, policymakers, NGOs, and anyone engaged in biodiversity conservation and nature recovery. #NatureRecovery #Biodiversity #ConservationScience #PlantTaxonomy #Systematics
