Filmed on Saturday, November 4 2023, I drive around Rantoul, IL to see what's going on. Rantoul is named after Robert Rantoul, Jr., a U.S. representative from Massachusetts and a director of the Illinois Central Railroad - the town was established to serve the needs of the railroad industry. John Penfield laid out Rantoul in 1854 for the Illinois Central Railroad, and by 1856, it had a functioning post office initially known as Rantoul Station, later renamed to Rantoul in 1862. A significant chapter in Rantoul's history began in 1917 when the United States Army selected it as the site for Chanute Field. This decision was influenced by its proximity to the Illinois Central railroad and the War Department's ground school at the University of Illinois. The 1930s saw Chanute Field expand significantly, becoming a central part of the local economy as it trained thousands of airmen. After World War II, it was renamed Chanute Air Force Base and continued to play a critical role until its closure in 1993. The closure of the Chanute Air Force Base had a profound impact on Rantoul's economy, leading to a sharp decline from which the town has struggled to recover. #driving #drivingtour #travel
