Brief Information: Kara-Balta (Kyrgyz: Кара-Балта - "black axe") is a city in Kyrgyzstan, the administrative center of the Zhaiyl District of Chui Region. It was elevated to city status in July 2024. Located on the northern slope of the Kyrgyz Mountains in the western part of Chui Region, 62 km from Bishkek. Founded in 1825. Area: 32.1 km². City status was granted by decree of the Supreme Soviet of the Kirghiz SSR on September 9, 1975. During the Soviet era, the city's main enterprise was the Kara-Balta Mining Plant (KMP), the largest uranium ore processing plant in Central Asia. The city's largest enterprise was the oil refinery of China Petrol Company Zhongda, but it has been closed since 2019. The city has a food technical school, a branch of the Kyrgyz State Technical University, a vocational lyceum, a medical school, 13 comprehensive schools, and several private schools with instruction in both Kyrgyz and Russian, as well as a network of preschools.
