The album was produced by Jamie Wagner, owner and head engineer at Chicago's Strobe Recording, located in the heart of Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. In a recent interview Wagner recalled, "I have been a longtime fan of John Prine's songwriting and always wanted to record his songs with musicians/bands that were less interested in faithful recreations, but show more focus on versions that re-imagine Mr. Prine's songs without any changes to the lyrical content." What transpired is a 17-song compilation showing the great imagination of the artists involved and the depth and flexibility of the music and lyrics of John Prine. The sessions began back in the summer of 2005 and continued through April of 2009. Producer Wagner initially started the project as a way to promote his new recording studio by showcasing his experienced team of engineers while giving local Chicago artists the chance to express their artistic visions without restriction. Wagner says, "I think these artists have done a great job of showing their appreciation of and respect for John Prine as a Chicago artist. We feel this album has the potential to introduce the songs of John Prine to a newer and younger audience." Rob Brookman, founder of Lost In America Music and a contributor to the album says, "all the bands/musicians who donated their time and services to this effort are working musicians in the city of Chicago. A few of the artists are on local labels but the majority are independent artists who play regularly in local clubs and bars, as John Prine did during his tenure in the late 1960s Chicago folk scene."
