Panasonic GH4 Vs Panasonic GH3 Vs Canon 5D MK III Low Light Shootout GH4 Low Light Shootout Vs GH3 Vs 5DMK3 Disclaimer: 1- This video is not a scientific test; this is me trying to test the perfoemance of the camera in a real life situation using an early firmware release (0.5) 2- My opinions are purely subjective as they reflect my personal experience with the camera and its results. They are not affected by any official or none official affiliation or sponsorship from Panasonic or any other source. You might wonder why this test is only tackling the camera’s performance at 6400? The answer is that I heard that Panasonic is increasing the GH4’s ISO threshold to 25600! They also promised a new sensor that performs better under low light situations. Excited with the news I went to have a shootout at 6400 and beyond. After my first couple of tests I was boggled by very strange and inconsistent outputs. Hours passed to investigate the reason for that inconsistency to realize that the only way to go beyond 6400 is through Photo Mode, which creates this weird inconsistent look to the clips, additional to the fact that beyond 6400, the clips look identical… yes… IDENTICAL Please watch the video to see the results. How does the GH4 perform in Low Light against GH3? Maybe 5-10% improvement at most, not because you get less noise, but rather you get less “colored” noise than GH3. They both have the same amount of stubborn noise that even Neat Video Denoiser wasn’t able to handle! You probably need more advanced softwares such as Dark Energy. What I had to do is to shoot at 4K and downsample in order to get relatively smaller noise for Neat Video to be able to do its job… and yet it was still struggling! Check the results in the video. GH4 Vs 5D MKIII All I can say is kudos to Canon 5D MKIII. You are still the queen of low light… I understand that the full frame sensor has a hand in that… but I would surely say their sensor/codec duo is really raising the bar that seem to be pretty high for all the other big names. It’s clear that this closely guarded lowlight technology is also shining in their C camera series such as C300 and its sisters. I really wish there was a way to mash up the 5D sensitivity with GH4’s image quality… ahh… some things has to be left for dreams Bottom line: 1- Similar to the GH3, I would be very cautious to go beyond ISO 1600. 2- I would set the Master Pedestal to 5or 10 at most as it brings out more noise in the shadows than details. 3- Consider buying a denoiser software when using the GH4 generally speaking.
