Today was a BIG day for our draft horses. We hooked our client Clydesdale mare Breezy up beside Oliver, our rescued Clydesdale stallion, for her very first time pulling double. Oliver is experienced in harness and has pulled double before, but this is all brand new for Breezy as she continues her training. To make it even more special, we pulled out the homemade wooden sleigh JR built when he was just 16 years old and headed out onto the snowy Ozark trails for a winter drive you won’t forget. What started as a peaceful sleigh ride quickly turned into a challenge. The hills, fresh snow, and the weight of the sled caused it to slide forward into the horses on the downhill stretches. At one point, JR had to jump off and hold onto the back of the sleigh to keep it from running into Oliver and Breezy… and the horses literally dragged him down the hill. This is real-life draft horse training, real problem solving, and a perfect example of how green horses learn through experience. Breezy handled her first time in double harness incredibly well, and Oliver proved again why he’s such a steady partner. If you love: Clydesdales. Draft horses working in snow. Horse training in real time. Homestead life in winter. Homemade equipment and old-school skills. You’re going to love this one.
