Have you ever stopped for a minute and asked yourself "what is a sport"? What makes millions of people every year sell out stadiums? Why does sport unite people? Have you ever thought that a video game could achieve these same things? That they might be a new form of sport? That sooner or later your country could be the Olympic champion of something played on a computer? We live in a constantly changing world and the world of sport is no exception. Sports events have changed over the decades, adapting to the reality of their time. And today's reality is increasingly digital. This talk aims to raise awareness of the disruptive eSports industry and its implications on sports entertainment. Martim Portugal Ramôa is in his early twenties and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management. Born and raised in Alentejo, Portugal he has been a fan of the Olympic Games since he was seven years old. And, after living in Greece to get in touch with the history and culture of the birthplace of this event, he was nominated Olympic Young Change-Maker for Portugal, in which function he currently represents his country at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. In this past year, he has been working closely with the International and Portuguese Olympic Committees, in order to prepare the Portuguese Mission to the event. Within this cooperation, he has kept a watchful eye on eSports and the Olympic debate surrounding them. He considers this industry to be extremely disruptive and wishes to raise awareness regarding this phenomenon. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
