Composting is nature’s ultimate recycling system. Imagine a forest, plants and animals grow, die and get incorporated back into the soil to nourish the growth of the living community. It is all part of the circle of life. When we compost, we are replicating this cycle. Let’s take a closer look to see what it is all about.Composting is a natural process where plant matter gets broken down into a soil amendment. When we say organic in this case we are talking about any living or once living thing. Beneficial microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, insects and worms make their home in the compost pile carrying out the decomposition. The end product of the process which we call compost is a dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling material that can be added to soil. It is rich in nutrients and healthy microbes which reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, suppresses plant diseases and pests, promotes higher crop yield and improves the structure of our Colorado clay soils. Compost can even help capture and destroy contaminates in the soil, air and water.About 40% of all the waste we generate in Boulder County is organic matter that can be composted. When we throw these organics in the trash we are not just needlessly filling our limited landfill space – we are actually negatively contributing to global climate change and pollution. In the oxygen poor environment of a landfill, organic matter doesn’t decompose in the same way and doesn’t create valuable compost. Instead it rots and creates Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and also forms leachate, a toxic liquid that can seep into our ground and water supply. When you compost your food and yard waste, you are helping to mitigate climate change, reduce pollution and regenerate soils making our natural world thrive. You are also extending the life of our landfills so we don’t have to build more on the land that we would rather be living, working and playing. When you compost, you are replicating one of nature’s most beneficial processes. To learn more about composting please visit www.bouldercountyrecycles.org.
