A live debate held on September 7, 1983, in Baton Rouge between the two gubernatorial candidates, Governor Dave Treen (R) and former Governor Edwin Edwards (D). The debate was moderated by Beth George Courtney of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and featured questions from a panel of four capitol reporters, Bob Courtney of WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge, Ronni Patriquin of the Shreveport Journal, John Hill of Gannett News Service and Robyn Ekings of Louisiana Public Broadcasting. In addition to their opening and closing statements, the candidates answered questions related to their political appointees, raising taxes, funding the statewide drainage plan, job creation, providing aid to private schools, setting spending limits on gubernatorial campaigns, reforming special retirement plans for public officials, the industrial tax exemption, the environment, prison overcrowding and their response to what the voters view as their negative qualities.
