Wolfgang Niedecken speaks about the "Concert for Berlin": For the very first time, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Universal Music’s ‘Panorama’ label released a special digitally re-mastered highlights album from the historic 1989 ‘Concert for Berlin’. Only hours after the gates of the Berlin Wall had been opened to elated East Germans, the staff at Radio Free Berlin (SFB) organised a free welcome concert for the first-time visitors. Two days later the SFB would undertake a live broadcast of that entire 11-hour-long concert, featuring 20 rock and pop artists, all performing to an audience estimated at 50,000. The recordings of the event were only recently unearthed in the archives of the SFB’s successor station Radio Berlin-Brandenburg and have never been released. The line-up included Joe Cocke, Melissa Etheridge and performances by West German stars Udo Lindenberg, Nina Hagen, Konstantin Wecker, Wolfgang Niedecken and BAP. Performers from the East include Die Zöllner, Silly and Pankow.
