It’s the country’s largest water project in 50 years, originally planned for five years, but completed in less than three. Once separated by Beigang River, the entire agricultural center will now have 70 million tons more of usable water every year, increasing Taiwan’s resilience against extreme weather events. An irrigation water supply project for the southern plains region is officially inaugurated. It’s the largest water project in Taiwan in the last 50 years. Lai Ching-te President Can we all give a round of applause to all the agencies involved? Thank you. This will be a boost to household, agricultural and industrial water consumption alike. The plains region stretching Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan is Taiwan’s agricultural center. Before this project, water supply could not be shared between Yunlin and Chiayi, separated by Beigang River. Now, with a newly completed aqueduct, water supply can now be carried all across the area. Lai Ching-te President There are two milestones. First, Taiwan’s largest irrigation systems are now interconnected. Upon completion, the project will increase the total transferrable water volume by 70 million tons annually. Chen Junne-jih Minister of Agriculture We at the Ministry of Agriculture must take it upon ourselves to improve agricultural infrastructure, especially water supply systems. The project was scheduled for five years, but we couldn’t keep our farmers waiting. They couldn’t wait for us to take our time, so the five year timeline was compressed to just two years and ten months. Due to the climate crisis, farmers today are more frequently affected by extreme weather. The new project makes Taiwan’s water supply more resilient.
