This book is very popular with classical society, even today on the island of Bali. What makes this book special is the inclusion of the phrase Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which later became the motto of our country. The story of Sutasoma itself has a Buddhist background, but in it gives a picture of the acculturation between Buddha and Shiva. Sutasoma is an incarnation of the Buddha Wairocana, whose mission is to calm the world and bring humanity to true consciousness. Born into the world at a time when evil was at its peak. Although in some of the pupuh the Buddha's superiority over Shiva is seen, Mpu Tantular firmly stated that Buddhist followers will not find the truth if they do not know the truth of Shiva, and vice versa. Kakawin Sutasoma has been handed down until now in the form of handwritten manuscripts, both in papyrus and paper. Almost all of these kakawin manuscripts come from the island of Bali. However, it turns out that there is one manuscript that comes from the island of Java and contains an early fragment of this kakawin and comes from the so-called "Merapi-Merbabu Collection". The Merapi-Merbabu collection is a collection of ancient manuscripts originating from the area around the Merapi and Merbabu mountains in Central Java. With this it can be ascertained that this text really comes from the island of Java and not the island of Bali.
