SOUTH KOREA: MEXICAN PRESIDENT ERNESTO ZEDILLO VISIT

(29 Nov 1996) Natural Sound Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo has arrived in South Korea, the first visit here by a Mexican president since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1962. Zedillo, who arrived Thursday, is meeting South Korean President Kim Young Sam for talks concerning both countries' economic co-operation and the security of the Korean peninsula. Mexico's President, Ernesto Zedillo who is on an Asia tour after attending the APEC summit, has arrived in Seoul for a state visit. The Minister of Foreign Affairs met Zedillo and a guard of honour stood to attention at the airport as part of the President's official welcome. President Zedillo is the first Mexican head of state to visit Seoul since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1962. The Mexican President will be spending his three-day visit, talking with South Korean President Kim Young Sam and meeting with business leaders, all with the intention of increasing economic cooperation between the two countries. Security developments on the Korean Peninsular are also on the agenda. South Korea and Mexico are expected to sign an extradition treaty and an agreement on establishing representative offices for tourism promotion in each other's capitals.
