In Episode 1 of One Piece, “I’m Luffy! The Man Who’s Gonna Be King of the Pirates,” a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy dreams of becoming the King of the Pirates after being inspired by the pirate Shanks, who once saved him and gave him his iconic straw hat. As a kid, Luffy accidentally eats the Gum-Gum Fruit, which gives his body the ability to stretch like rubber but takes away his ability to swim. Years later, Luffy sets sail alone to start his journey to find the legendary treasure known as the One Piece. Along the way, he ends up on a ship attacked by pirates and meets Coby, a timid boy who works for the cruel pirate Alvida. Luffy defeats Alvida and encourages Coby to follow his own dream of joining the Marines before they leave together for their next adventure. In Episode 2, “Enter the Great Swordsman! Pirate Hunter Roronoa Zoro,” Luffy and Coby arrive at a Marine base run by the corrupt officer Captain Morgan. There, they learn that the feared pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro has been captured and tied up, accused of crimes he didn’t commit after standing up to Morgan’s son, Helmeppo. Luffy decides he wants Zoro to join his crew, despite his reputation. He retrieves Zoro’s swords and helps him fight Morgan and his soldiers. After Luffy defeats Morgan, Zoro agrees to join him as his first crewmate, officially beginning their adventure as pirates together.
