Why exactly is Bach's "Air on a G String" so popular? (Remember it from the best-selling record "Greatest Hits of 1720?) Here Duane gives FIVE reasons why this piece is special and then plays a wonderful arrangement by Alexander Siloti (6:25). Bach's Air on the G String was originally written for strings, "Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068." It's called “Air on the G String” because the violinist August Wilhelmj (1845-1908) arranged it so that he could play the melody entirely on a violin’s lowest string, G (transposed down more than an octave).
