Does what it says on the tin: instructions on basic use of a compass and map in navigating your way through the countryside and reducing the chances of you becoming lost and coming to harm. The map used is from the Ordnance Survey Landranger series, and the compass is made by Silva. Being familiar with the Ordnance Survey map is just as important as being able to use a compass. It is no good being able to determine which direction your intended destination is if you are unable to figure out how to get there. In hiking in the countryside we very rarely travel as the crow flies, in a straight line; because between you and where you're making for could be any number of hazards, like rivers, cliffs, rock faces, etc. So you need to be familiar with your map and able to determine a safe route to where your compass is pointing. This basic lesson will be of use to anyone intending to hike any of Scotland's long-distance walking trails, or indeed walking trails anywhere in the world.
