PERTH--Vireo Health harvested the first legal batch of maraijuana in New York in nearly a century on Thursday. The company was awarded a state license to produce and dispense medical cannabis a few months ago and has been working to get it ready for patients with prescriptions in January when the program is set to launch. In a nondescript building with heavy security in Fulton County, the Vireo team has been cultivating the plants. "I'm confident that we'll be able to cover all the patients that are registered in New York right away," Dr. Kyle Kingsley the CEO of Vireo Health told CBS6 on a tour of the facility. While Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Wednesday that would speed up the process of getting medical cannabis for patients that are in critical need of it, Vireo Health seems to be the company that's the furthest along in the preparation process and it's still reaching for a January launch, "we're very focused on our time table and getting the meds to patients as soon as we can, we'll work with the department to accelerate that to the extent possible but there's a lot of things that need to be done still," says Dr. Kingsley. Vireo Health's chief medical officer in New York has been traveling across the state, speaking with doctors who are interested in the process of prescribing medical cannabis. The average patient with a prescription for medical cannabis will spend $300-$500 a month for it, "as this opens up, that's going to be a major initiative for us, convincing insurance that this makes sense and I think it's just a matter of time," Dr. Kingsley says of trying to get coverage for it. MORE Governor Cuomo signed legislation on Wednesday giving those with degenerative diseases faster access to medical marijuana.
