Director Ivan Reitman on directing Robert Redford, Debra Winger and Daryl Hannah in Legal Eagles.

(This is a Movie Flashback audio interview) Robert Redford, Debra Winger and Daryl Hannah provided Legal Eagles director Ivan Reitman with a stellar cast. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it depends on your critical view of the outcome of the movie, and maybe your perception of Reitman as the director of such comedies as Cannibal Girls, Animal House, Meatballs, and action-comedy Ghostbusters. As it turned out, there were a few unpredictable twists and turns before Ivan got the cameras rolling on Legal Eagles, which was not, originally, a “romantic” comedy! It was initially written for two other big stars who, for various reasons, couldn’t do the film. The casting of Redford was more by chance than anything else, but it also led to a significant change to the original script. Including the casting of Debra Winger. As Reitman says near the end of the interview, once the New York shoot began, tensions emerged on-set, which led to Redford declining to ever work again with one of his co-stars. However, before we got to discussing Legal Eagles, I started our chat finding out a little bit about what got Ivan into the movie industry… when his family wanted him to be a lawyer: I should note that the original ending of the cinema-release version of Legal Eagles was changed for television, with a different legal verdict. Sadly, Ivan passed away in February 20-22 from Natural causes, at the age of 75. He had continued to work as a producer right through to 2021. One of his last projects was a film called Triplets, re-teaming Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger but adding Eddie Murphy into the mix.
