Date: 5/18/20 Location: Meyer Middle School, River Falls, Wisconsin Temp: 60°F Signal: 3 minute alert Units Heard: Whelen WS-3000 (main unit) - 250ft W.S. Darley STH-10 - 0.4 miles Whelen Vortex R4 - 0.7 miles Whelen Vortex R4 - 1.0 miles Federal Signal 2001-130 - 1.1 miles Federal Signal 2001-SRNB - 1.5 miles NOTE: As of November 2022, this siren has been replaced by a Vortex R4. Went up to River Falls with Asa today for their monthly siren test. When I first went here in early 2018, they had three analog Whelens (two 3000s and a 2750). Today, this is the only one that remains, with the other two having been replaced by Vortex R4s in late-2018 (2750) and mid-2019 (other 3000). This was the only one I had not heard prior to now, so I decided to finally cross it off the list today. After going to the Darley at noon for the daily blast, we headed here, set up, and waited for the test. Due to a 911 call, River Falls needed to delay the test, and it was further delayed afterward by a few of their police officers not being at their assigned sirens (they physically confirm the operation of every siren). Finally, 11 minutes after 1PM, the activation tones finally came over (not featured because I’d prefer not having Werden murder me in my sleep), and it stumbled into life for a full alert. Overall, I would say that this siren sounded very worn. It was pretty quiet up close, and seems to struggle a little bit. You can hear several of the city’s other sirens throughout the test very clearly, including the Vortexes, 2001s, and the Darley. In the wide shot, you can see the River Falls police officer who was assigned to this location leave the school parking lot after it successfully activated, which I thought was pretty cool. I apologize for the wind noise, I had to set up with the wind to my back which was not ideal, especially considering how strong the gusts were today. Enjoy! The City of River Falls tests their siren system on Mondays near the end of the month at 1PM March-September, weather permitting. Their exact schedule can be found on their website.
